Women empowering Women

On Sunday, I attended an amazing event for like-minded women in business at Riverland Brisbane. An event ran by two gorgeous gals, one of them being my friend, Katie Stevens and Dani Byrnes. Together they have come up with a brand called Minding her business. A way for all empowered and like-minded women to get together and network in a fun, inspiring and motivating environment. Unlike those highly corporate events (I’m sure we have all attended), not that there is anything wrong with corporate events at all, but this is more a relaxed environment and for women only!

This was their second event for Minding her business. I absolutely love the purpose behind their brand. It’s all about empowering other women and supporting one another rather than tearing each other down. I am all for supporting my sisters, and I love watching people I know, and friends grow and bloom and reach their goals. I mean, why wouldn’t you? Life is no competition and so much easier without the bitchiness and jealousy. Plus, when we all work together, who knows what we can create as an army of creative and inspired women?!

There were three guest speakers at this event. Guest number one, Ayda Shabanz. A business woman with successful companies across Australia and Asia in finance and property and educating others on all things finance and business. The second guest was Leisa Goddard, a well known Australian TV journalist, who in 2010 was nominated for a Logie after filming with the Australian troops during the Afghanistan war while she came under Taliban rocket attack. She has covered three main channels here in Australia. Leisa has since started her own PR company called Adoni Media. The lucky last guest was Jordy Lucas, who you may recognise her name from the Australian TV drama, Neighbours. Jordy is also a girl boss in the PR, marketing and media industry. All three of these amazing guest speakers were so inspiring in their own way. Between the three of them, they are a huge wealth of knowledge.

Inspiring; I feel like that word was used copious amounts on the day and also in this blog. BUT it’s so true! Everyone I connected with were so inspiring. Each had a story and experience that just motivated you. I left on such a high, and two days after, I still am. I took away so much from this event, more than any other business seminars I’ve ever been to. Not kidding.

I took away many quotes from that day. One of them being from the gorgeous Ayda Shabanz was “Failure isn’t something to be embarrassed about, it’s something to embrace.” And it’s true. One thing with me, personally is that I have no fear of rejection. I am persistent and work hard for what I want, without giving up. I don’t have fear of failure as such, when it comes to putting myself out there, I mean of course you doubt yourself at times, but that’s when you should listen to your gut and go for it! “If your dreams don’t scare you, then they aren’t big enough.” – I found that quote floating around on social media and loved it.

I thought 2017 was a big year, who am I kidding. This year, is the year of change and success. It’s going to be a big year for me. My dreams for 2018 are HUGE. And yes, it scares the shit out of me! But at the same time, it also excites me. I know I have an amazing support system and a great network of talented and successful women themselves. There will always be someone to turn to for advice, because you can never stop listening and learning. There will also be someone out there who will try and knock you down, but you need to not let that get into your head.

Another favourite quote of mine again from Ayda Shabanz (I LOVE this one) it is so damn relevant to my last year and now something I live by; “Be mindful of who you spend your time with. Give energy to those who give you energy.” In life, we all go in different directions, I have had to learn in the past year to distance myself from negative energy, to those who don’t cheer you on and those who only bring you down. I have had to be selfish and put me first. This means sometimes saying no to things such as; events, holidays and occasions etc. I have had to really prioritise things in order to focus on what I need to do, to get where I want to be. Sounds selfish? A little, but sometimes you have to be. As the girls at MHB say “Do it for you, not for them.” But, no matter what you do, always be kind, to others and yourself!

I have many goals in life, one of them is to inspire others, and I get messages almost daily from people saying that I have inspired them or empowered them, and that makes me so happy!
